“Second Hand Store” derives its name from the eponymous 1978 song by Joe Walsh. It is an exploration of 20th century memories and defunct Americana from an era predating the compulsion for social media and marketing narratives. The small “polaroid” watercolors, surreal reinterpretations of found photographs, are punctuated by an anonymous figure on a solitary journey across a lost American landscape. Alongside these pieces are large ink drawings, which both utilize and undermine traditional Japanese brush technique with a mixture of chaos and expertise. They are derived from mundane iphone photos of friends and loved ones in unremarkable settings. The figures are decontextualized from a physical reality and then supplemented with the lyrics to beloved popular songs from an era of radio play.
